Morning Matcha

Morning Matcha

Crafting a morning routine can be deeply comforting. When your mornings have a familiar rhythm, your body begins to recognize that it can expect a predictable and gentle transition into the day, rather than waking up and immediately rushing into responsibilities.

This steady rhythm greatly supports the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis, which controls your body's stress response, by signalling predictability it can count on thus activating your parasympathetic or rest-and-digest response.

Back in December 2026 I made the difficult decision to give up coffee. But don't worry, if you work with me I certainly won't impose this on you, it was completely a personal decision! Despite the comfort of this morning ritual, it was not benefiting my adrenals and I kept feeling that I was digging myself deeper into an "energy bankruptcy" by spending energy I didn't actually have in "the bank". For months I played around with substitutes that never quite satisfied the familiarity I had grown to love.

I finally decided to give matcha another try (I had tried it back in 2020 and strongly disliked it!) and this time is was exactly what I had been searching for. I choose matcha as my substitution of choice for various reasons. But first, what is matcha?

For those not acquainted with matcha, it is a very finely ground green powder made from green tea, that has an earthy and grassy flavour. I know great sell, right? It is traditionally from Japan, but has been popularized to many parts of the world. Because it is finally ground, you are actually consuming the whole leaves and therefore experiencing more pronounced (concentrated) benefits than its steeped counter part.

Now on to the benefits of this wonderful elixir:

  1. Caffeine boost without the crash
  2. Anti-oxidants for the win
  3. Possibly supports weight loss by influencing the microbiome
